Lyrics Context:

The animal spirits talk about the lives that they have to live and how this is just how it is.
The Law of the Jungle reigns supreme, that’s the ironclad law and if you don’t play the game, you’re going to be eaten.
Sorry, that’s just the way it is.

——————–

Eat, Eat, Eat or Be Eaten
Like an, Like an, Like an animal
Eat, Eat, Eat or Be Eaten
Like an, Like an animal

捕食者が今も闇から狙ってる | Hoshokusha ga ima mo yami kara neratteru
震えて見渡したってもう手遅れ手遅れ手遅れ | yurete miwatashitatte mou teokore tekore teokore
The end of the game
ケダモノだものエモノだもの | Kedamono da mono emono da mono
Even now the ones who are predators are aiming for you from the shadows
If you tremble or overlook them even once then
it’s already over, it’s too late
The end of the game
You animal -things-, prey -things-

Bear your fangs and tear them apart with your claws,
These powerless monkeys with glazed over eyes!

ケダモノだものエモノだもの | Kedamono da mono no emono da mono
Forcing words and prayers are subjugated through force,
Something like “For someone else’s sake” ? [*3],
There’s nothing that can be done for loners and domesticated chicken [*4].

For in the end, this world is the survival of the fittest

Are you strong, fast, or cunning? [*6]
If you’re none of those, then become the prey!

The reality that only the strong remain
The law of the fittest, Like an Animal

Notes:

[*1] ケダモノだものエモノだもの – (KEDAMONO da mono EMONO da mono) means literally
“Beast is thing, prey is thing” with the subject still maintaining as “the weak (humans)”;
Mono is left ambiguous, but probably means 物 (mono – thing) which refers to an object – thing, not a person.

[*2] 謀りあう (hakari au) — hakari means to conspire or to scheme, au means 合う to group together — I would translate it as
“Everyone is scheming together all at once against each other” but I can’t think of a better way to convey the same idea in the same # of syllables.

[*3] なんて (nante) at the end of a subject means “such a…” or “something like…”, but in this context the 2nd half is left unsaid;
When she says 「誰かのために」なんて、 ([dareka no tame ni] nante), it’s like saying “As if someone would do something for someone else’s sake, are you serious? You believe someone when they say something like that?”

[*4] Domesticated chicken obviously refers to livestock — prey that are raised with the explicit intention of being eaten, but it refers to Kutaka Niwatari, the 3rd stage boss and ‘singer’ of this song. Her existence puts to question this line, so it’s a call forward to later in the album, too.

[*5] 眼キラつかせ (manako — eye kiratsukase — to glare at)has キラ (kira — killer) written in katakana — kiratsukase means to stare at something, but by writing it in katakana instead it becomes a pretty silly play on words to say ‘killer glare’.

[*6] In Touhou’s take on the Animal realm, there are 3 (and 1 more not elaborated on) Yakuza-esque clans that run the show in an endless struggle for dominance;

The Kiketsu (鬼傑) family, roughly translating “oni excellence”, believes that working within the system and attacking from blind spots/behind/being underhanded’ is the key to dominance; they are represented by Otters (if anyone knows why, let me know, all I can find is a single tale to match that — https://etc.usf.edu/lit2go/73/more-jataka-tales/4972/the-otters-and-the-wolf/

The Keiga (勁牙 — Strong fang) family, represented in game by wolves, believes that strength/power itself is the key to dominance

The Gouyoku (剛欲 — Obstinate Desire, sharing the same pronunciation with 強欲 — greed) family, which believes that greed and ambition itself are the key. They are represented by Eagles.

[*7] 夢中 (muchuu de) means literally “Dream – Within” — I shortened it to “daydreaming”, but in the context of the line it refers to how humans in general live much of their lives without viewing reality as it is, instead viewing the world through a lens of idealism (dreams) in how they perceive things.
